چکیده

We discuss the selection and observations of a large sample of nearby galaxies, which we are using to quantify the star formation activity in the local Universe. The sample consists of 334 galaxies across all Hubble types from S0/a to Im and with recession velocities of between 0 and 3000 km s−1. The basic data for each galaxy are narrow band Hα+[N] and R-band imaging, from which we derive star formation rates, Hα+[N] equivalent widths and surface brightnesses, and R-band total magnitudes. A strong correlation is found between total star formation rate and Hubble type, with the strongest star formation in isolated galaxies occurring in Sc and Sbc types. More surprisingly, no significant trend is found between Hα+[N] equivalent width and galaxy R-band luminosity. More detailed analyses of the data set presented here will be described in subsequent

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

In a first of a series of studies of the Hα + [NII] emission from nearby spiral galaxies, we present measurements of Hα + [NII] emission from HII regions in M81. Our method uses large-field-CCD images and long-slit spectra, and is part of the ongoing BeijingArizona-Taipei-Connecticut Sky Survey (the BATC survey). The CCD images are taken with the NAOC 0.6/0.9m f/3 Schmidt telescope at the Xingl...

The Deep2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: Evolution of Close Galaxy Pairs and Major-merger Rates Up

We derive the close, kinematic pair fraction and merger rate up to redshift z ∼ 1.2 from the initial data of the DEEP2 Redshift Survey. Assuming mild luminosity evolution, the number of companions per luminous galaxy is found to evolve as (1+z), with m = 0.51±0.28; assuming no evolution, m = 1.60±0.29. Our results imply that only 9% of present-day L∗ galaxies have undergone major mergers since ...
